In its 11th year of operation, Primitive Fear has gained the reputation of being one of Colorado’s most terrifying attractions. Upon entering this year’s house, your senses are immediately under attack as you enter a room completely filled with fog and a slow delayed strobe effect. It’s a simple effect that disorients you just enough for you to lose your bearings, which make it difficult to find your way through the rest of the house. Like I said very simple, but still an AWESOME effect. It took us about 10 min just to get out of the first fog filled room. This was also the first house of the evening that used a great deal of mechanical and pneumatic devices to “touch” you without actually touching you (great effect)
Keep in mind, this was our 4th house of the night, so everything was starting to look routine no matter where we went…. and then came…. Realm of Terror. The creators of this house used a TON of imagination when coming up with the various themes for the rooms (scenes). Just the right balance of human acting, animatronics, and amazing set design make this haunt a must see for anyone looking to truly be scared. Aggressive in it’s design, Realm of Terror starts off very calm and eerie, but quickly moves into chaos as you’ll find hanging body bags, snakes, and the infamous “flying log” to really get your heart pumping. Also, it’s a very physical house that you have to maneuver through (ie...Dead ends, bungee hallway, and the room of columns)
This house had everything you’ll ever want in a haunted house. Right from the start, you’re greeted by the innkeeper of the house who allows you to enter by crawling through a secret compartment in back of the fireplace. While very plain in design, 13th Street Manor definitely compensates with perfectly timed animatronics, dark corners, and great acting. Using cleverly placed lighting and antique furniture, the manor re-creates every old scary house you’ve ever stepped foot in. Falling bookcases, sliding doors, changing intervals, and misdirection are only some of the tools used to keep you guessing around every corner. To give you an idea of just how scary this attraction is a member of my team actually fell down twice because she was so scared of what popped out at her. As if the ambience wasn’t enough, this is also a VERY physical house. You’re gonna have to crawl, bend, duck, lean, and run to make it out of this one alive.

Last year I wasn't able to go to very many Haunted Houses, so this year my friends and I decided to start early and see as many Haunts and we could. We started out visiting the HauntPlex which turned out to be a great starting point. It's Commerce City location was easy to find and when we arrived we were ready to be scared. We bought the 3 haunt package and decided to start with Primitive Fear.
Primitive Fear has a kind of Jungle thing going on. There is a swinging wood bridge, as well as this swinging log that looked like it was going to hit us (great effect). There was a Mike Myers room filled with fog as well as Jason (who gave my friend a good scare). There were walls that collapsed and all in all it was great fun.
Realm of Terror was our next stop. When we entered the Haunt we were lead into a dungeon that was just plain creepy. The
area with all the tombs had everyone in my group going. The actors here were incredible. They all stayed in character and did their best to scare us. They had some very realistic sets and you could tell a lot of thought went into this Haunted House. There was this bungee hallway we had to get through and all I could think was "I sure hope none of these break". This house was a blast for all of us.
Lastly, we made our way over to the 13th Street Manor. This turned out to be my favorite house of the three. I guess I just love the more traditional Haunted House idea. The walls moved, we had to find hidden passagways, there were rooms that changed around us. 13th Street Manor had a great effect with a couch and the actor there scared us all to the floor. There seemed to be more effects in this house as well and they worked well with everything else going on around us. The bloody bathroom was an unexpected scare.
We felt like Hauntplex was definitely worth it and would recommend these Haunted Houses to everyone.
